JOURNAL
It was a great tournament season — I caught some big fish, and even managed to win the Southern Challenge, which, of course, tops the list as most memorable experience of the entire run.
I found all my fish there in one tiny little spot, no bigger than the size of the boat, and each day I managed to do well by just catching what I felt I needed — a decent weight each day, and of course on the last day just unloaded it with 22 pounds!
Another equally memorable event, although not in a good way, was fishing with a nasty case of food poisoning at Wheeler, where I won, despite being miserable and throwing up the entire first day. The next couple of days were only slightly better — as I still threw up off the side of the boat at least a few times a day! Maybe the fish felt sorry for me, because I still took a victory there—go figure.
Overall, my most productive technique all season involved a 10” power worm, but I worked with what the conditions called for at each lake. My biggest fish overall in the tournament competition was a 7.8 at Amistad.
Wiley X’s products played a huge role in my success this season — so many times they came into play to give me an edge when I needed it. My Wiley X Blinks let me see a lot of fish I would have missed otherwise — they weren’t bedding fish, and without my glasses I wouldn’t have been able to spot them.
I’ve competed for the last three years and it just keeps getting better. I realize what an honor it is to win one of the Elite Series, there are plenty of great fishermen who don’t have one under their belt. I’m already really looking forward to next year!
Sunshine Showdown:
Day One started out okay, but when the wind came up in the afternoon it got nasty and stayed that way through Day Two. Lots of wind. Which meant that flippin’ worked pretty good. (Worked even better during practice, but that’s how it goes sometimes.) I was catchin’ ‘em on rubber worms that first day.
While I didn’t do so hot on this one (Florida’s always tough for me), I did appreciate my Wiley Xs. Used the amber lens for site fishing and could really see what I was doing. Those Revolvr’s also really cut down on the side light, so you’re eyes can relax and stay focused on the fishing.
Citrus Slam
Couldn’t wait to get out of Florida, but with back-to-back tournaments, we hung in there.
Conditions were perfect for sight fishing – and the Wiley Xs were perfect, too. I was throwing a frog right at the beds. Could literally see the fish up ahead and really nailed ‘em, but only got one really good one in the boat. Also tried running a worm fast over the beds and got some good strikes. In the end, I did a lot of fishin’, and hooked quite a few, but didn’t get enough in the boat to be competitive.
Really looking forward to Texas!
BIO
Jeremy has always had fishing in his blood — he started bass fishing with his father and brothers in West Virginia back when he was five years old. From that early start, he fell in love with the sport and stayed with it because
of the thrill of the competition. "My favorite aspect of being a pro angler is
the sheer competitive nature of it — I think that's what we’re all in it for, as I don't know any pro angler who isn't extremely competitive!"
So far this dedicated angler has netted a top ten finish during his first year of competition, is currently ranked 114th in the world, and holds a 68th Bassmaster standing going into the 2008 season.
Jeremy's professional career really kicked into high gear in 2004, and this former fireman and paramedic has been consistently landing lunkers like the pro he is ever since. One of his favorite honey holes is at Grand Lake, and one of his most effective techniques is throwing a jig, but this is one angler who can definitely change up his style when the fishing requires it.
One thing that suits his style to a "T" is the variety of edgy looks available in Wiley X Eyewear's line of sunglasses tailored expressly for the bassin' market. "I love the fashionable styles combined with the incredible lens clarity. Eye protection is one of the most important tools we have in fishing, which requires clear visibility, whether running a boat, or searching for bedding fish, you always need to protect your eyes."
When he's not competing, he loves to train bird dogs, and when asked about his family life, replies, "I'm married…
with three bird dogs!"
